Unfortunately, finance is based in NYC so when the economy took a turn for the worse, the most jobs were lost in NYC. 175,000 financial jobs were lost in the City in the last year. If you didn't lose your job yet, you are scared you will.

My husband's company closed the NYC office in May, putting 8 people out of work. All were married with families, kids in school and mortgages to pay. Out of our group of six friends, four have lost their jobs. No one has any prospects.

People working in finance are the ones who pay the big bucks at indie stores. They're also the ones who hire creative folks to design things for them. Interior designers, artists and shop owners are all hurting from the direct impact.

It's a shame - and it's going to be a long time before NYC feels like the once did City again.

I am thrilled to see that this designer took a chance to open a store. I have my fingers crossed for her during such a difficult time.

NYC is certainly a changed place. Anytime I walk around my own little neighborhood, I'm shocked by how many 'For Rent' signs I see. I can only hope they are filled quickly, and with fresh, new, indie owned businesses.

It was so good to meet you (and the other great ladies!) too. We should make it a tradition. :)
