bulbs

I had an order this year from a client for 6 potted amaryllis so I decided to also try some at home. I am quite pleased with the results. I got these from the wholesale market pre-sprouted (the stalks were already 6" tall) but you can get the bulbs and start from there. This variety is so delicate and lovely - it's called Apple Blossom. Each stalk (there were 2 and can be up to 3) is producing 4 flowers. I removed them from their plastic pots. I used a birch bark tube (available through Small Stump) wrapped around a glass cylinder vase. I then placed pea gravel on the bottom, some dirt, placed the bulb on top and then more pea gravel to weight the bulb. I topped it with my favorite moss. The are making a fine addition to our cozy home.

Ooh! Hope you don't mind, but I think I'm going to be a copycat. I have a set of the birch bark tubes from Small Stump and have been 'stumped' (sorry, couldn't resist) on how to use the shorter squaty ones. I think this is a perfect idea!

Love those pink blooms -- I've never seen any like that.

That looks so great! I've been trying to figure out what to do with all my birch tubes. I love the moss coming out of the top.

That looks gorgeous! I think I need to go get some indoor bulbs.

I love what you've done with the moss and the birch, it's beautiful.

I grow some amaryllis every year. This year I have a red lion (a deep, velvety red) that has one bud which is now 32" tall and still doesn't look ready to bloom. There's a second bud not far behind. I built them supports out of twist ties, tape, and bamboo skewers but every twelve hours they grow and move. I also have a bright orange bulb, and a salmon bulb, both of which are growing but aren't quite as far along as the red one. I'm beginning to wonder if the red one isn't an amaryllis at all, but perhaps a rogue triffid....
