Yesterday Tay and I made an old holiday classic. Have you seen these? They are candy cane cookies. Easy to make and such fun! Ususally the recipe has crushed candy canes but I prefer the simple flavor of the almond extract.
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sifted powdered sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons almond extract
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/2 cups sifted all purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
Blend butter and shortening together until smooth. Add powdered sugar, egg and flavorings. Gradually stir in salt and sifted flour.
Divide dough in half. Add food coloring to one portion. Chill 1 hour. Roll 1 teaspoon light dough and 1 teaspoon pink dough into strips about 4 inches long. Place strips side by side pressing together lightly. Twist like a rope. Place on ungreased cookie sheet curving top like a cane handle. Bake at 375 degrees 10 minutes or until lightly browned. When cool sprinkle with powdered sugar. Enjoy!
